For me, mathematics has always been about unlocking how things work, an interest that led me from Surrey Maths School to studying Physical Natural Sciences at St John’s College, University of Cambridge.
Yet that passion wasn’t an instant spark. I had always enjoyed mathematics, but at secondary school, opportunities to enter competitions depended on being selected by my school, and I was rarely chosen. It was only later that I had the chance to take part in competitions regularly, and I loved it.
Looking back, I often think that if I had been given more opportunities to be challenged and encouraged earlier on, I might have discovered that deeper passion for mathematics much sooner.
That experience is a big part of why I’m so committed to broadening access through The Archimedes Awards, to ensure every student, regardless of where they study, can challenge themselves, discover what they’re capable of, and perhaps uncover a passion they didn’t yet know they had.
