The Duke of Edinburgh's Awards

Archimedes Awards has been formally recognised by the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award as the first and only Mathematics-focused Approved Activity Provider for the DofE Skills pathway.

For the first time, mathematics is recognised within DofE not as a supporting subject, but as a standalone, lifelong skill essential to problem-solving, decision-making and innovation, from everyday life to the most advanced scientific and engineering fields.

This marks a significant milestone for mathematics education in the UK and creates a new national opportunity for students, particularly those aspiring towards STEM careers, to build confidence, independence and intellectual resilience through sustained mathematical thinking.

Build intellectual resilience through mathematics

Building intellectual resilience through mathematics

This pathway is designed to develop skills that are increasingly important for young people today:

  • Intellectual resilience
Alongside the physical challenges traditionally associated with DofE, this pathway develops intellectual resilience — the capacity to concentrate deeply, persist through difficulty and think independently when solutions are not immediately obvious.
  • Training the brain through challenge
Just as physical training builds endurance and strength, sustained mathematical problem-solving trains the brain. Students learn to sit with complex ideas, test approaches and refine their thinking through focused, independent effort.
  • Independent thinking in an age of artificial intelligence
As automation and artificial intelligence become increasingly prevalent, the ability to think clearly and independently is more valuable than ever. This pathway develops reasoning and judgement, preparing students not only to use technology thoughtfully, but one day to shape it.
  • Discipline, focus and logical confidence
Through challenging problems and logical conundrums, students build self-discipline, analytical focus and confidence in their own thinking — skills that cannot be outsourced, automated or shortcut.

How the programme works

Each week, students will:

  • tackle a set of thought-provoking mathematical challenges
  • reflect on their thinking and improve their solutions
  • design and solve their own original problems

All work is recorded in a Digital Logic Journal, which provides clear evidence of sustained engagement and progress.

Completion and recognition

At the end of the programme:

  • student engagement and progression are reviewed
  • a DofE Assessor Report is completed
  • students receive formal confirmation of DofE Skills completion

On successful completion, students are also formally awarded the Archimedes Scholar Awards, recognising their commitment, intellectual growth and achievement throughout the programme.

Why choose this pathway?

This option is well suited to students who:

  • enjoy problem-solving and logical thinking
  • want to build confidence and resilience in mathematics
  • are interested in STEM pathways
  • are looking for a meaningful and academically enriching DofE Skills option

All enrolment, delivery and assessment are managed by The Archimedes Awards, ensuring a smooth experience for students and families.

The Archimedes DofE Mathematics Skills Pathway (Bronze)
The Bronze pathway is a 13-week structured programme designed to develop confident, independent mathematical thinkers.

Across the programme, students experience a carefully sequenced journey blending challenge, critical thinking, reflection and creativity, while strengthening habits of independent study and intellectual perseverance.

How the programme works

1. Tackle meaningful mathematical challenges
Students engage with non-routine, competition-style problems drawn from:
• logic and reasoning
• number and algebra
• geometry and spatial thinking
• probability, risk and strategy

The challenges reward insight, perseverance and reasoning, not speed or memorisation, building discipline and confidence in independent thinking.

2. Reflect and review
Students revisit their solutions, identify gaps, refine reasoning and reflect on how their thinking has developed. This process is recorded in a Digital Logic Journal, providing clear evidence of progress and maturity.

3. Create original mathematical problems
Students design their own challenges, explain their thinking and present fully reasoned solutions, shifting from problem-solvers to problem-designers.

Outstanding student work is regularly curated and featured in the Archimedes Awards publication, preserving students’ ideas as a lasting record of intellectual achievement.

4. Capture learning in a Digital Logic Journal
Each week’s work is documented, creating a powerful portfolio of engagement, independence and growth.

Completion, assessment and recognition
At the end of the programme:
• engagement and progression are reviewed by The Archimedes Awards
• a DofE Assessor Report is completed
• students receive formal DofE Skills completion

Students are also awarded the Archimedes Awards Certificate of Mathematical Achievement, recognising sustained effort, intellectual growth and completion of a nationally significant mathematics pathway.

Pre-Bronze Mathematical Enrichment for Year 7 and 8

In addition to the standard pathways, we are also offering a Pre-Bronze Online Enrichment specifically for students in Years 7 and 8. While these younger students are not yet eligible for the formal DofE Bronze certificate, our programme serves as an excellent foundational experience, preparing them for the rigour of future DofE challenges. To celebrate their achievement, The Archimedes Awards will issue an Archimedean Associate Award to recognise their early commitment to mathematical excellence and their successful completion of this preparatory enrichment stage. Outstanding student work will also be curated and featured in the Archimedes Awards publication, preserving students’ ideas as a lasting record of intellectual achievement.

Progression beyond Bronze
Archimedes Awards currently delivers the Bronze DofE Mathematics Skills pathway.

As our provision develops, we intend for students to be able to progress through further levels, including:
• Silver: Applied Mathematical Strategies
• Gold: Advanced Mathematical Research

Our commitment is long-term, supporting students from foundational reasoning to advanced mathematical confidence and future aspiration.

Intake schedule
We run two intakes each month on the 1st and 15th.

We look forward to welcoming students onto this journey, supporting them as they grow in confidence, independence and mathematical thinking, and celebrating their achievements along the way.
